1888 – 2023 Celebrating Heritage and Sharing Hope

“Jesus began his work of new creation with one or two puzzled women and a few frightened fishermen….One of the things about the way new creation works is that very often God seems to take special pleasure in doing things despite the fact that human resources seem slim, not to say grossly inadequate.” —NT Wright “It’s…from the resurrection of Christ…that a new and purifying wind can blow through our present world. Here is the answer to Archimedes’ challenge: ‘Give me somewhere to stand, and I will move the earth.” —Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"God Gave Us Mothers" Barbara Ninow Berdin, vocal Guitar, Jim Johnson

"She Will Be Called Blessed" The Singers

Leader: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

People: To grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit.

Leader: They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations;

People: They shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

Leader: You shall be called the priests of the LORD; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God.

People: Instead of shame, there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor, they shall rejoice in their lot; they shall have everlasting joy!

Leader: Come, let us rejoice in our Risen Lord!

OPENING HYMN – #140 Blue Hymnal

1. Holy, holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty;

And we lift our hearts before You as a token of our love, Holy, holy, holy, holy.

2. Gracious Father, gracious Father, We’re so blest to be Your children, gracious Father; And we lift our heads before You as a token of our love, Gracious Father, gracious Father.

3. Precious Jesus, precious Jesus, we’re so glad that You’ve redeemed us, precious Jesus; And we lift our hands before You as a token of our love, Precious Jesus, precious Jesus.

4,Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Come and fill our hearts anew, Holy Spirit;

And we lift our voice before You as a token of our love, Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit.

Loving Father, you have brought us from darkness to light. And yet, it is sometimes so discouraging to take stock of how much sin still dwells in my heart and life—anger, impatience, anxious control, envy, fear, lust, self-pity, greed, and selfish ambition. I am full of compromised desires, and my transgressions are too numerous to count. I want to want what you want and to do what you command, yet my heart is so easily pulled away. Have mercy, Lord, and forgive me. Please send your Holy Spirit to renew my heart in your grace and power. Guide my steps in following you, I pray.

Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.’ The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, ‘Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.’ So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused[b] the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. The Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. The Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God

CALL FOR OFFERING–Congregation sings

  1. be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit; Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into Hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven; And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting.

HYMN – #298 Blue Hymnal

1 There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in God's justice, Which is more than liberty.
There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven;
There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgment given.

2 For the love of God is broader Than the measures of the mind;
And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind.
If our love were but more faithful, We would gladly trust God's word;
And our lives reflect thanksgiving For the goodness of our Lord.

CLOSING HYMN #337 Brown Hymnal

1 Be still, my soul! the Lord is on thy side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul! thy best, thy heavenly Friend Thro' thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul! thy God doth undertake To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul! the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul! the hour is hastening on When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul! when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
