 1888 – 2024 Celebrating Heritage and Sharing Hope

“Jesus’ apostolic community is basking in and then inevitably pouring out light into a darkened world. And when that community moves out into its community, by simply being Christian, by simply telling the truth, the Light extends itself into that part of the world, too.” —Frederick Dale Bruner

WELCOME, ANNOUNCMENTS,  GUESTS AND  SPECIAL DAYS

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
People: Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way,
Leader: Though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
People: “Be still, and know that I am God.
Leader: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

OPENING HYMN #125 Joy To The World, Brown Hymnal

1 Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King;
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room, And heav'n and nature sing,
And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

2 Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns; Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3 No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as the curse is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love And wonders, wonders of His love.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 41

Q. What does God forbid in the eighth commandment?
A. God forbids not only outright theft and robbery, punishable by law. But in God’s sight, theft also includes all scheming and swindling in order to get our neighbor’s goods for ourselves, whether by force or means that appear legitimate, such as inaccurate measurements of weight, size, or volume; fraudulent merchandising; counterfeit money; excessive interest; or any other means forbidden by God. In addition, God forbids all greed and pointless squandering of his gifts.
Q. What does God require of you in this commandment?
A. That I do whatever I can for my neighbor’s good, that I treat others as I would like them to treat me, and that I work faithfully so that I may share with those in need.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord, you are our Father, and we are your children; you are our Creator, we are the work of your hands; you are our Shepherd, we are your flock; you are our Redeemer, we are the people you bought back; you are our God, we belong to you. Therefore, do not be angry against us, to correct us in your wrath. Recall not our iniquity to punish it, but chastise us gently in your kindness. We call upon your name for mercy, as those who bear the family mark of baptism. Fill us with your Spirit, and continue the work you have begun in us by your grace, so that the whole world may know that you are our God and Savior. In Christ’s name we pray, amen.

SILENT CONFESSION      PRAYERS FOR GOD’S PEOPLE

                   Old Testament Reading –  Exodus 20: 1-2, 15, Page 66
Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery You shall not steal.

The Word of the Lord, Thanks Be To God

New Testament Reading – Luke 19:1–10, Page 82; Ephesians 4:28, Page 194

Luke 19:1–10 Page 82  He entered Jericho and was passing through it.  A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was rich.  He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature.  So he ran ahead and climbed a sycomore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.  When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.’  So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.  All who saw it began to grumble and said, ‘He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.’  Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.’  Then Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.  For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.’

Ephesians 4:28, Page 194 Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy.

HYMN #382 Be Thou My Vision, Brown Hymnal

1 Be thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art -
Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

2 Be thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son, Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

3 Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

4 High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven’s joys, bright heav'n’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

                                              HOLY COMMUNION

1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.

2 Perfect submission, perfect delight! Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. [Refrain]

Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. [Refrain]
